Mold Test

Types of tests

The four main types of tests that can be performed are:

  • Air test.
  • Test on surfaces.
  • Massive tests
  • Mold cultivation test

It is recommended to perform all four types of tests since each one has its own advantages and disadvantages.

  • Air test

Air test analyzes the concentration of mold spores in the air of your home, workplace or building. Air samples are taken and then examined under a microscope.

An air test will let you know if your place presents a mold problem, even if no mold can be seen growing. However, it is important to keep in mind that the amount of mold spores in the air may drastically change in a short period of time, giving misleading results, for this reason, it is recommended to perform multiple air tests.

  • Test on surfaces

Surface testing consists of taking samples from different surfaces in the house, building or workplace to find the amount of mold and spores deposited around the house. Samples are collected with a swab, lifting tapes or other methods. After the collection process is successfully completed, mold samples are carefully studied in a laboratory.

When it comes to test on surfaces, results obtained may vary since mold growth and spores are not distributed evenly across surfaces at home, their accumulation may change over time. Unlike air tests, tests on surfaces cannot identify the exact concentration of mold spores in the air.

  • Massive tests

Massive tests include the collection of pieces of material from around the house, building or structure. The material is taken to a laboratory where mold particles of the material are studied under a microscope. Massive tests can tell if a mold problem is present. It can also provide an idea of the concentration of mold particles in the structure.

  • Mold cultivation test

Cultivation tests are those that are made by taking a sample of the mold particles from the house and cultivating them in a laboratory until they become large mold colonies. With this methodology, it becomes easy to identify the mold species that is infecting the area.

Only mold particles that are still alive can be grown. However, the dead mold particles in the house still cause allergies and health problems. There are other tests that can detect both, live and dead mold in a house, but they cannot always identify the mold species.

Once the type of mold is identified, it is studied. Mold assessment will let the observer know the nature, qualities, capacities, and other elements of each type of mold, as well as the most effective way to eliminate its presence in the structure.

Mold assessment becomes a key factor when eliminating mold. Deeper understanding of the mold will lead to a safer and more reliable way to deal with this health hazard. Mold assessment should always be carried out by a specialist, it is not recommended to do it at home since it may risk the habitants of the building.
